Market risk declined in the first quarter but trading volumes and a reversal in sentiment in February suggests investors felt more like a plump trout being tempted by a dangling worm than at ease with the contradiction of a resilient economy and forecasts of a more dovish Fed. Somewhere in the market’s lower volatility reading was a barbed hook, leaving them uncertain of what they should do or not do, wishing that the pivot thesis was true but at the same time fearing that it has been brought to them by the same people who brought them Fat Chance.
